“Our business is a family affair…
…two generations—one dedication…”
Alejandro De Miguel was born in Argentina.
As a young man, he dreamed of joining the exclusive group of
fine wine-makers in his native land and eventually enrolled
at Juan Agustin Maza University in Mendoza, the country’s
dominant wine region. He graduated with a degree in Oenology,
the art and science of making wine.
After graduation, he became an apprentice
at Trapiche Winery, founded in 1883, and one of Argentina’s
most respected and traditional wineries. For nearly ten years,
he polished and perfected his skills and became one of their
outstanding vintners, leading the prestigious house to several
major international awards.

In 1990 he came to Canada where he met
Gabe Magnotta, then a relative newcomer to the wine business,
and he became the head winemaker for Magnotta Wineries for seven
years. In 1997, he and his wife, Mabel Sacchi, a respected oenologist
in her own right, opened their own business.
Now their daughter, Alejandra, who has
worked in the vineyards of Spain and Chile learning viniculture,
has joined them to continue the family tradition here in Canada.
Today, Portofino guarantees award-worthy
wines made with a genuine passion for the art of creating the
finest products…a dedication that has made Portofino one
of Canada’s leading wine enterprises and the reason why
the De Miguel family name is the one to watch.
